「赤身（あかみ）」（心材）"Heartwood"
「赤身（あかみ）」（心材）とは、丸太の中心部分。多くの樹種で赤身部分の方が色が濃く、より高い耐腐性を持っている。
"Heartwood" is the inner part of a tree trunk. The color of heartwood of most wood species is darker and it has a higher resistance against rot.
「白太（しらた）」（辺材）"Sapwood"
「白太（しらた）」（辺材）とは、丸太の樹皮に近い外側部分の淡い白色やクリーム色をした部分。
"Sapwood" is the outer part of a tree trunk under the bark with a white or cream color.
「源平（げんぺい）」"Hearwood-softwood mix"
「源平（げんぺい）」とは、ひとつの材の中に「赤身」と「白太」の両方が含まれているもの。
"Hearwood-softwood mix", or "genpei” in Japanese, is the sawing pattern of a board which contains both heartwood and sapwood.
「上小節（じょうこぶし）」"Small knots"
「上小節（じょうこぶし）」とは、直径10mm以下程度の小さな生き節がいくつか含まれた材の品質の事。
※生き節：枝が成長過程で木に巻き込まれ、幹の組織としっかり結合した節のこと。
“Small knots" refers to the quality of wood boards with a few live knots with a diameter of 10 mm or less.
「柾目（まさめ）」"Quarter sawn"
「柾目（まさめ）」とは、丸太の中心を通して切り出した時にあらわれる縦縞状の木目。木目が真っ直ぐ平行になっている。収縮や反りが出にくく、緻密で狂いが少ないことから、精度が求められる敷居・鴨居・棚や戸棚・床の間など、内装の仕上げ部分や建具材として重宝されている。
“Quarter sawn” is the sawing pattern of a tree log when the log is sawn in the sawingline through or near the pith. It shows a straight grain pattern. Quarter sawn boards show less deformation due to the change of moisture content, and this it is often used in fittings and furniture.
「板目（いため）」"Plain sawn
「板目（いため）」とは、丸太の端から端まで平行に切り出した時にあらわれる木目。木目が平行ではなく、山形や不規則な波形になっている。ナチュラルであたたかみのある風合いが特徴。
“Plain sawn” is the sawing pattern of a tree log when the log is sawn in the sawing line with some distance from the pith. The grain shows a random “mountain” or “contour line” pattern, which gives a natural and warm impression.
